European Federation of National Youth Orchestras
In 1994 the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras (EFNYO) was founded. Since then the best European Youth Orchestras became part of this organisation and so did the RIAS-Youth Orchestra. Among the main tasks of the Federation is to provide a plattform for orchester leaders to exchange information and to give young musicians from different countries an opportunity to learn more about the cultural and structural common grounds as well as the differences of each other. This means an enormous profit not only for their own work but for the broader European Music context.
With the support of the European Union an exchange program was initiated. This program offers young musicians the chance to play as a guest student in one of the EFNYO-Orchestras and to live and study a different European orchestra culture.
One of the most important projects in cooperation with the EFNYO were the “Symphonic Variations of Europe”. It is a Youth-Orchestra festival of the musical present and Avant-Garde, which took place in Berlin in summer 2000 as “Young Euro Classic”. It has since become a very successful recurrent summer event, managed and organised by the “German Friends of the European Youth Orchestras association”.
